- The dirt road and I, we resemble each other —
- not very modern, nor durable.
- In a camera lens, you will see us through a yellow haze.
- If you wish to follow the road to the sea,
- it would take a morning and an afternoon on foot,
- but there is always a charming fragrance along the way,
- and when I close my eyes, I hear footsteps and wingbeats
- in threes and fives, light and lively,
- a chorus in the air, like music on wings
- that lifts me out of despair.
- I would listen to it in the morning.
- I would listen to it in the afternoon.

- 面對照相機,總會蒙上一圈黃暈;
- by Meifu Wang
- Water droplets
- leap off the fall,
- crash onto the cliff wall,
- bellyflopping
- down a starless hollow.
- Winged angels, water droplets,
- awaken me from a dream
- with an azalea
- receiving mist
- at the bottom of the gorge.

- by Meifu Wang
- The thing that skedaddled over the hills
- almost losing its clogs,
- the thing older than dreams and memories,
- with an ancient vibe but untold lineage —
- unlike the airships crossing this same aqueous earth,
- with sleek logos for all to see,
- this unscripted, uninstrumented thing
- that came before any airship,
- whatchamacallit:
- that life-sized dream-like thing,
- that nearly lost its boots on the run,
- that was born from the wind?
- Have you heard it howling, tapping,
- asking after the innermost of you?

- by Meifu Wang
- Let me roar and tumble to the sea,
- carrying with me the black rain from heaven
- the earth's indigestible waste and slag,
- and the fears of the defeated.
- My hair will char and hiss and tangle,
- spinning a cocoon to hold my love for you.
- Life's spring is swallowed by a sea of flame
- as the earth's iron claws tear at the ocean floor.
- By tomorrow, nothing will be left of me —
- my torn flesh curling like something stillborn —
- but my voice will tremble through the night:
- Watch my fire burn, on the rim of your heart.

- by Meifu Wang
- You walk into my dream,
- wobbly with a broken wing.
- I see snow falling and summer already leaving,
- and fear the frigid sea will keep you here.
- The arctic has no autumn.
- The sight of you, so sorrowful,
- makes me turn my face away.
- I close my eyes, trusting the old saying:
- Time heals, and time flies
- whilst we sleep.
- But as soon as I drift off,
- a rustling sound awakens me,
- so I open my eyes and tend to you.
- Be brave, I tell myself,
- a mother's heart isn't made of wood,
- and I cuddle you in my arms...
- Until... suddenly...
- it comes to me
- that you are the prime mover of time,
- a prince in disguise —
- your wingbeats are what keep the river flowing.
- So I lay my head down. I close my eyes
- and let the night hold me,
- relieved to know
- that time cannot fly away
- whilst I sleep.

- by Meifu Wang
- I knew you were with me only as a phantom,
- but we spent a beautiful day walking and talking.
- I kept telling myself how beautiful it was to see you again.
- I knew you came to me as a phantom,
- but I told myself: if your phantom brings me such joy
- that I can't tell the difference between the two joys
- — one from being with the living you, and the other with the phantom you —
- why should this joy count for less?
- Why shouldn't this phantom world be my choice world?
- But I knew, the whole time I was with you,
- while you held my hand and we walked through the garden,
- that you were speaking to me as a phantom.
- So I dreaded the moment you's have to go,
- like Hamlet’s father in Shakespeare’s play.
- We meandered until we came to a long house,
- where a row of cherry trees lined its loggia
- holding up the dusky sky with their sturdy silhouette.
- I took a step into a dim, sheltered room.
- I needed a moment away
- for I didn't want you to see my weary heart;
- I was dreading the moment you would leave.
- The door of the room closed behind me,
- separating me from you and the cherry trees.
- But no sooner was I inside, and you outside,
- that I broke down: “Ah, how sad I've been since you left!”
- My tears transported you back to me, there and then.
- You held my face and said:
- “Yes, I know you have been sad.”
- I looked at you and said: “I didn't want you to leave.”
- You let my head rest on your shoulder, and said: “I know.”

- I inherited my father's voice, not bright or round,
- more like a sudden rush of breath —
- maybe our ancestors didn’t speak much.
- Sometimes I envy
- wrens and nightingales and countertenors
- the way they lift their heads and trill out heavenly songs.
- But more often I long for a voiceless world
- where the milieu holds the unspoken words in its hands.
- My ancestors might have built their houses
- on some distant headland difficult to reach,
- visited only by accidental travellers.

- by Meifu Wang
- Right, I didn’t give you a proper burial,
- I wasn't even there to see you off, that last day.
- Is that why, on this dark night,
- when wind blows from left and right and front and back,
- you fly zigzag, descending halfway from the sky
- to disturb this tropical night?
- But you know I always loved you, and told my love for you
- every hour and every minute while you were alive,
- is that not enough?
- It would be if I were a dog, or something else so close to the human spirit.
- Yes, once or twice I didn’t pay attention to
- how I prepared your meal —
- potatoes and meat mixed in a bowl for your return.
- But that day you didn’t return.
- Then, there were the human quarrels that drove you into hiding.
- You glared at those pale-green faces — faces so familiar —
- but together we drove them away.
- Tonight, on this tropical avenue, someone is singing about an eagle;
- I ask if she indeed has seen one or perhaps she has seen you.
- A few spirits float amongst the shadows of the giant banyan trees
- the way jazz drifts out
- from the corners of this post-colonial city,
- its walled-in courtyards, its cafés down deep alleys,
- some non-native souls, some estranged returned from exile,
- moving in and out of this dark night, these dimly-lit streets,
- in and out of my half-native consciousness.
- Then, suddenly you fly zigzag from dog heaven,
- halfway between earth and sky,
- to remind me that I never gave you a proper burial.
- I can send the ghosts gently on their way when they come to chastise me,
- I'd even greet them with a small, humble smile
- just to tell the world again that I haven’t forgotten you,
- but this darkishness, this wind, the foreignness of this city
- will forever stay with me — on these broad avenues,
- where spirits longer amongst the giant banyan trees,
- by walled-in courtyards, and jazz drifting from deep alleys.

- by Meifu Wang
- You speak to me. You speak to me
- in the most seductive voice.
- Not that I don’t dream of your love,
- not that I don’t cherish every word of yours,
- but your voice stirs up a storm of echoes
- that blasts open the gates of hell —
- They pour in from every direction:
- a motorcycle skidding across the asphalt road,
- a screeching head under the blazing sun,
- red roosters in a fighting ring,
- a tidy garden next to the hospital morgue.
- The walls are no longer useful barriers.
- You speak to me. You speak to me in verse,
- lifting my spirit out of the river of gloom,
- so even in sleep, I feel the hour's soft breeze
- and hear music from multiverses away,
- from the metaphysical world where you are.
- But I turn sleepless again at dawn
- as your sweet voice returns with a cavernous disquiet:
- cold silence in the skulled church,
- blue-green ghost nets adrift at sea,
- ducks in the New Year's market,
- spawning salmon in the Upper Snake River...
- Then, I remember you are dead, too.

- Ah, bring me wine,
- cheap wine, with the plainest bouquet,
- so it calls up no buried memories,
- so when I look to the east or to the west,
- I see only autumn’s familiar fuss —
- the yellowing leaves letting go.
- No, I don’t want wine with a complicated personality,
- I don't want wine with an ethereal aroma
- that might usher in phantoms from far away,
- phantoms with beautiful eyes,
- like yours.

- by Meifu Wang
- The day plods on, driving an overtired donkey cart,
- whilst I grow impatient with the setting sun
- who malingers long after waving goodbye
- still sprinkling gold dust on a whim,
- flooding my chamber with an orangish hue.
- But all that I do is wait for you,
- knowing you will come, merging with the dark.
- You are not one of those who love sunny days,
- looking to show off your silver and gold.
- You are not in the company of brash flowers
- that flirt with honey bees
- in constant talk of love.
- But I am waiting for you,
- knowing you will be here, merging with the dark.
- Alone, without the sun, the sky is at her finest,
- ready for the northern lights to drop in for a gallivant.
- You will be here, oh, Mighty Shadow.
- You will be here, in the gentle shade of night.
- Oh, night, deep as the sea,
- I answer your call, deep as the sea.

- I go, far away from home,
- scattered thoughts trailing behind me
- — ah, my winsome sidekick.
- Roving till dusk, I need not raise my head
- to see heaven’s curtain close.
- Suddenly he arrives,
- more abruptly than the night,
- rising out of the deep blue sea,
- using huge talons to stay the earth.
- He lives in the sea, the wild roaring sea.
- He hangs tight as the Earth spins,
- and turns his face to the rain and the winds.
- Consider how quietly my thoughts come and go,
- my days, likewise, waft to and fro.
- The sky sleeps in the bosom of the sea,
- and I hear his drunken snore,
- dark, now, and deep,
- gentle, then, and soft,
- asking me:
- must you live thinking life is brief?

- 他,來得比夜更突兀;
- 他,屹立於深海之中;

- Hammer hard on it, rip it apart
- so that it bleeds
- and begins to shriek.
- This heart has long broadcast
- its presence, but I question
- its authenticity.
- Puncture it, pierce it
- until it bleeds and shows a little susceptivity,
- so I know I have not nurtured it
- only for it to become an artful liar.

- Ordinarily it's the fortune tellers who are eager to engage.
- One of them staked out the underpass to the train station.
- He said, “oh, come, wait, look at your face, let me tell you about...”
- Tell her about what? Fate? Money, love, luck, career, health?
- Was the “telling” meant to map an escape route from misfortunes,
- from one’s demons, the decisions made and not made?
- That particular afternoon the fortune teller pointed out a few milestones,
- fat years and lean years, some past, some still to come.
- “Oh, but that was the year my daughter was born.”
- “It had nothing to do with your daughter,” he replied.
- They say fortune-tellers are masters of statistics,
- using the same method as facial recognition, but leaning more on intuition.
- That afternoon, when she sat before the monk, south of eastern Mongolia's grassland,
- under the white and vermillion Tibetan-Buddhist monastery,
- it felt less tentative than science.
- Her travel companion was displeased, muttering
- words such as scam, fools, weak-minded, and so on —
- to the daughter of an impoverished postwar soldier,
- every expense had to have a tangible purpose,
- had to fit in with logic.
- Towards the end of the day, they took the bus to return to the city
- — so slow-moving was the bus that they wondered if the driver was paid by per passenger,
- unwilling to miss the teenager dashing out from the alley
- in a glorious retro-metrosexual outfit,
- or the grannie with a grocery bag in her saggy arm,
- or the foreign trio in black Gore-Tex, map in hand, trying to plot their next move.

- Not all houses are perfect,
- some come with ad-hoc apparatus,
- for example a log ladder in a two-story cob home;
- some are improvised sanctums, like an igloo;
- some are relics, valued only for sentiments.
- Once I stayed in a house
- that had rigged a wired net to act as a lift.
- I was terrified after just one ride,
- shaken like a bluefin tuna hoisted over open sea
- or an acrobat in a glass cage at the carnival.
- Not all houses are castles,
- not all manors come with a chapel for prayers,
- but oftentimes there are children and animals around
- that more than make up for
- the house's imperfection.

- 就是老松樹或老杉樹的樹幹鋸出來的;
- 有些房子就是緊急避難所,比如愛斯基摩人的冰屋;

- Once upon a time I saw a salt merchant sitting by her donkey cart.
- She and her donkey had travelled far and waited long to enter the monastery,
- but the monks’ prayers went on even longer.
- By mid-morning the little monks’ clogs began to clatter behind the temple walls,
- and soon the great gates opened.
- The donkey finally unlocked her knees and entered the holy ground,
- carrying life-saving salt, harvested from an inland sea
- a few hills away.
- The monastery sat on scrubland, hemmed in by bald mountains
- south of the windblown Silk Road. A sleek airport was just been built
- to funnel in modern visitors, offering perks like thirty free minutes on the phone.
- I used one minute to call you to say goodbye.
- Earlier that day, we had walked up a concrete bridge over the churning Yellow River.
- At the top of its curve, you spoke of your mom and dad,
- picturing them at their front door, eyes lifted, waiting for rain.
- Their sod house stood north of the great Yellow River,
- though your ancestors had chosen the desert as home, to elude the warlords.
- Settlers everywhere tell their own stories of love for water.
- There's the Fountain of Youth, the Eternal Spring, the Whispering Well, amongst others,
- but of all men's intimacies with water, none is sweeter
- than an oasis in the desert.

- The wind redoubled, rousing the sea and shaking the earth.
- At dawn, I opened the door to a dew-glazed world
- only to be stunned by the sight of a tree lying on its side.
- He used to stand tall in the wind with raffish hair;
- I was a child then, inexperienced with love,
- but couldn't help but be mesmerized by his stellar look.
- The unhurried sun filtered through the clouds
- and lit up every part of him
- — viridian leaves, tony body, svelte ankles and feet.
- It awakened in me a quiet sorrow.
- I was a child then, inexperienced with death,
- but the breathlessness of the tree grieved my heart.
- Since then, on dark nights,
- if I happen to think of Shakespeare,
- or reminisce about my mom and dad, or ponder what comes after me,
- a heartache rises in the shape of a tree
- — infernal wind, crepuscular light, a profile in white —
- it seems like love, in Michelangelo's heart.

- Now that you are in the sky,
- all things all around emanate a blue light
- as if steeped in your starlight.
- When I was a child by the pond, water lilies’ leaves
- looked blue too, under dragonflies’ gossamer wings,
- a similar kind of magic. No wonder
- tonight's River Thames flows like a dream,
- hypnotising the whirling mists and the bridge lights.
- A sapphire glow reigns over the stone castle
- and the giddy commercial spires nearby.
- We used to stroll Shad Thames’ cobbled lanes
- between erstwhile cloisters of tea and spices
- down to London Bridge Station, where the sallow pipe organ
- would fill the grand foyer with her dulcet rapture
- when coaxed by some fortuitous, wandering lover.
- Your ambling gait lent the river a lightness,
- while phantom docks lay abreast the ocean's heartbeat,
- and the tide surged through St Saviour's Bridge
- into the lost river of Neckinger, where I raise my eyes,
- enthralled by the light over the city’s gamesome skyline.

- We walked into the wildwoods
- to listen to their susurration.
- On somnolent autumn days,
- we went too,
- to soak up their golden mood.
- Transfixed by their kaleidoscopic vein
- and the birds’ cheerful play, I thought
- eternity had come to rest on my shoulder.
- Still, amongst all permutations of beauty,
- your spirit outshone even the most unfathomable.
- Once again we enter the wildwoods —
- my same old self, with you on my mind.
- By a camellia tree blooming snowy-white,
- I watch a flock of goldfinches flit by,
- and see you in their company.

- If our days could be perfected by hands on earth,
- I have missed the mark.
- If love could be redoubled by courage alone,

- made in heaven for my poor spirit,
- spoken through the deep wells of your eyes.

- Thinking about your final days,
- I ask myself:
- Have your feathers grown thinner?
- Do your shoulders hang heavier?
- Do the fish swim past you faster now?
- I dream that you'll always be white
- without a speck of dirt on you.
- But even heaven is made of more than purity,
- no wonder your snowy-white body is melting,
- showing a blotch of salt-pink on your chest.
- Gone now, the wispy curls on your wingtips.
- Still, on this October day, your eyes are mist free,
- like the open sky in the last days
- of an ideal autumn.

- This forest revives itself in the falling of leaves.
- The palms of devil’s club webbed and shriveled,
- and the tall grass languishes under the weight of dew.
- Having shed its gaudy youth, the forest's afresh again:
- all is grayish-brown, every thin rib exposed.
- The hillside is crusted with overnight frost.
- One step onto the humus, and signs of life and death intermingle,
- yet the brilliance of the woods is fading
- as summer gives way to glorious autumn:
- somber is its tone, and what lovely duskiness!
- A trail of fallen leaves crisscrosses the sun’s path.
- Weary reeds lean against thorny roses,
- whose pink flowers yield only waterless fruit,
- untouched by squirrels, hares, magpies, and wolves —
- though there are cranberries, luminous and sweet.
- Between the seasons of birth and sleep,
- words wander through the woods on the shoulders of the wind.

- Today's sky looks like a floating world,
- a little paler than glacier blue,
- one colour from the top of the sky's arc
- down to the cracked earth below.
- I stand at the fjord's edge,
- surveying the mountains around me, in search
- of a perfect dome — somewhere
- I can leave my heart to wander,
- to roam its cloisters.
- November’s rivulets trickle down,
- veiling the mountains in white
- — the colour of decay —
- as they descend from heaven to sea.
- Red squirrels rove the frosted earth,
- down through the spruces' icy roots,
- listening to birds
- before the sound of footsteps comes
- I follow a trail where berries hang
- like cuckoos’ blood, frozen mid-drop.
- This forest is not cuckoos’ home, but I hear their cries
- from the depths of my heart.
- This year winter doesn’t stay. The willows
- are already budding catkins, and bohemian waxwings
- from who-knows-where are perching high.
- The trout lake wears a water lens on ice.
- A man swings his ice-chipping axe, madder than ever.

- Dante described a sublunar world
- between the fiery pits of Hell and a blissful Heaven,
- but I only believed in the heroic tales he told —
- about a poet and his friend making their way through shadowy lands,
- not unlike other explorers venturing into the unknown.
- But perhaps I was wrong, perhaps I was too simplistic
- in dismissing Heaven and Hell as mere abstractions,
- set against the steady cycles of the solid Earth,
- even if writers and theologians often wrap them in mystery.
- Nowadays, Heaven and Hell are no longer pure fantasy to me.
- Part of me hopes that Heaven exists for some,
- and that my burning soul is a testament of Purgatory's fires,
- for in this way, all my loves and hates wouldn’t have been in vain
- and my dreams might find a sphere to call home.

- If you were here with me again,
- my world wouldn't change all that much,
- but I would tear down the thorny fence
- erected to hide a broken heart
- that has turned blind for the longest time
- and stopped seeing miracles.
- To fill the deep punctures,
- I made poultices from native plants —
- blue irises, cranberries wintered-over,
- and the new silk of willow catkins.
- So the wretched heart was patched up,
- kept safe for slow healing.
- If you were here with me again,
- and better yet, for a longer stay,
- my world wouldn't change all that much,
- but my heart might be able to hear
- when miracles return once more
- to enchant the airy, open garden.
